-- FALLING INTO SILENCE --
John Herlihy
Ah yes, the shadow of time follows us
Just as certainly as it rises in the East
And sets in the West, having its way
We live on funnels of wind, platefuls of dust
Thimblefuls of rainwater and drops of honey
Moistening the lips and comforting the heart
As the minutes and hours march by without a glance
We continue to greet the bustling, bright day
Continue to attend the quiet repose of evening
We will continue to whisper of tomorrow
Of spring, of moonrise, and the flight of darkness
Until the day and hours of our destiny disappear
Into minutes and then finally into seconds
Like the ominous ticking of a grandfather clock
Weary, tentative, reluctant, its ominous tone as echo
Although ready now and about to fall into silence
Time’s ever-turning wheel will slow down at last
The movement gone that measures future and past
Once as sovereign to rule as a king on its throne
Now vanished as eternity enters to reign alone
