-- REMEMBER STILL --

John Herlihy

Upon awakening, children steamroll into the world,

Blowing as pennants into the unleashed wind, unfurled.

Show them a simple truth; they give back their heart,

Tuck a newly found treasure into their mind pried apart.

Feed them, fill them with delight, as they begin to grow;

They look back at me as if they already something know.

As I show them cardinal flowers and bee balm, they hush;

Nod in earnest at a praying mantis in the blueberry bush.

“You will see it change color,” I add, “if it decides to stay”

“They look goofy,” one ventures; another: “but they do pray?”

Of course, they pray, I think to myself, just like children do,

Every movement, breath and sound as true as the sky blue.

The royal barque floats slowly, landing on a dogwood limb;

Now the little children’s hearts are really filled to the brim.

Did you know that joe-pye weeds grow high into low cloud;

They shake their solemn heads at the noble weeds proud.

They see a hummingbird’s nest, touch a box-turtle shell;

One little rascal picks it up to take away for show and tell.

They are their own sunflowers, open faces reaching for sky;

Wind and light protect them from needless questions why.

Childhood is always preserved within as a precious seed;

The person goes forth in the world as a flourishing weed.

Unless they forget to remember, perhaps remember still;

The beauty of the world ever reveals itself and always will.

I had to relearn these things through many years of therapy. Too many traumas and other harsh experiences robbed me of the beauty around me. Then a very wise woman gave me the "assignment" to notice things like the small flowers along the roadway and the song of the birds in the trees. Slowly I regained my lost childhood innocence, at least within my inner self. I am forever grateful to her for this gift.

You captured my heart with this one, John! I can "see" the children and feel their wonder at these beautiful sights mother nature provides. Beauty is ours if we choose to see, eh?

Love ya!

So poignantly you have pictured the curiosity and wonder of childhood. Simply lovely.

A fine message John. 'Show and Tell', when I was a child, was a real hoot. A time when young personalities shined, and competitiveness began to take root. Certainly children come into this dark world because it needs the kind of light that only a child can bring. Well done. Peace... r

A beautiful rendering of that precious quality of innocence that adults ,and especially media, work very hard to banish as we age. The simple wisdom inherent in the sub-text of this poem is profound. I couldn't help but flash back to what I watch at least once a week on the tube, the BBC documentary series, "Planet Earth II". There is so much about nature and the natural world we're losing now, one is left hoping to not end up as the planets flotsam as this innocence is systematically obliterated by the powers that be for the sake of money and power.
