-- DEATH’S DOOR --
By John Herlihy
Is there a single person ready to knock on death’s door?
Anyone out there who can claim to know what’s in store.
Most of us tremble at the sight of death’s shadowy hood;
An eerie mist surrounds where the grim reaper has stood.
Our lives phases of the moon first waxing and then waning;
The moon’s borrowed light finally narrows down to nothing.
Of all the doors that are made available to us in the universe,
A door that will lead beyond the known world most perverse.
Even if a person were ready to know, what would it answer?
Come forth, enter this portal, all on the breath of a panther.
Just thinking about it wants to make me shudder and shake,
Our ship plies thru life’s waters unknowing what’s in its wake.
It is not I to knock on death’s; but death to knock on my door.
When the soul will leave the body a new adventure to explore.
