-- THE BEAUTY OF THE DAY --
John Herlihy
It would be callous not to comment on the beauty of the day,
As we go about our tedious business with so very much to say.
The morning lovely, the sky a chill blue, the world aglow in light;
Drapes of darkness now tuck away with the departure of night.
Those newly born spring leaves displaying the freshness of lime,
The wind blowing through the more somber evergreens sublime.
Why even sunlight and its shadows slept contentedly side by side;
The grasses laid out like a Persian carpet across a meadow wide.
The meandering brook cut through the rock heaps as if on the sly,
As it holds court over pebbles and stones evoking a solemn lullaby.
A flock of birds fly by chirping sweetly, leaving their shadows below,
In divine communion, as if divested of the earthly condition we know.
All of nature awake and alive, evocative of happiness or even sorrow,
To be awash in the present moment, with nary a thought of tomorrow.
