-- A Comforting Solitude --

John Herlihy

No more words to stay in compliance,

Only such emptiness as fills the silence.

No more excuses to justify the means,

Ragged reasons as the stuff of dreams.

No more hopes to fill hearts in desire,

Fading embers and ash in the dying fire.

No more temptation to lead us astray,

Hedges and burnt grass along the way.

No more promises a trust to betoken,

Shattered glass on the ground broken.

No more sorrow to set forth a tear,

Awash in life’s river over many a year.

No more regret of events gone wrong,

Only soft, echoing notes in a fading song.

No more loneliness as one’s only friend,

Just a comforting solitude until the end.

SOUNDS LIKE A POEM WHERE ONE HAS JUST...GIVEN UP AND WANTS TO BE LEFT ALONE. KIND OF SAD BUT I DO BELIEVE, AT SOME TIME OR ANOTHER, WE ALL NEED TO CUT THINGS OFF AND ENTER THAT 'COMFORTING PLACE OF SOLITUDE'. NEVER KNOW WHAT ONE HAS GONE THROUGH AND 'HEALING' TAKES TIME. SO FOR A SHORT WHILE, I DON'T THINK THIS IS A BAD THING, BUT ONE CAN'T STAY THERE TOO LONG, WE'VE GOT TO COME OUT...AND PRESS ON. GOOD WORK, MY FRIEND. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

Sometimes solitude isn't necessarily a good thing. Like, when there's far too much of it and there's little one can do about it. As Michael said there's a little sadness to this poem and that's what spoke to me most. Nicely done.

As one who has always spent a lot of time alone, I've always enjoyed the comfort of solitude. Although There did seem to be a tinge of sadness or melancholy in this write.

Nice poem, feeling and thought tip-toeing over those words and thoughts about how life has been changing as one nears the end of life. Enjoying the peace and quiet.
