 -- A Fragile Thing --

John Herlihy

The heart is but a fragile thing,

Filled by emotions our lives bring.

The heart whole as a divine token,

Later to seem bruised and broken.

The heart in pieces knows no rest,

Always in turmoil, restless at best.

A cold heart knows winter’s lament,

Chilled to the core in sad discontent.

Black hearts filled with unholy desire,

Burning coal embers without any fire.

A restless heart knows no true peace,

Not a home as it beats without cease.

But the pure heart is from light spun,

Sincere and truthful, second to none.

One's heart is fragile but it can also be extremely tough. How many of us bear old scars and new wounds yet keep going, ever hopeful?

The heart is indeed many things, and one can also have a strong heart, and a lot of heart.
