Holy or cursed? With tinnitus roaring in my head 24/7, I guess I'm spared the eerie sound of silence. I wonder which is worse...

Beautifully stated. You are right, most barely have a time and place where they can just think in silence. When I see those images taken from outer space at night, showing our influence, worldwide on the light that we generate turning night into day, I can also imagine that our constant noisy culture is polluting with sound the same way we are polluting with light.

Living largely alone, I find quiet times throughout the day very beneficial for my psyche. Some people never get that opportunity to just, think in silence. But I am also losing my hearing and one day may find myself in silence all the time. Not something I look forward to.

The only time I experienced silence, was during a tour of Carlsbad Caverns. Like any cave tour I've taken, at one point they turned off the lights, and for the first time, everyone stayed quiet. The silence was deafening. I could hear the blood rushing through my ears. It's also an experience in total darkness.

The modern world is nothing but noise, it seems, and silence is a rare commodity that must be sought to be found. The most profound silence I have ever found in nature was to be present in the snowy wilds of Yellowstone on a cold, cold February day when the wind and the snowmobiles and other sounds of "civilization" were absent. It was one of the most glorious moments of my life.
