-- Destiny’s Bell --

John Herlihy

Destiny is just around the corner,

Lying in wait there in the wings.

Beyond the edge of the horizon,

As a bell that resoundingly rings.

There around the next bend,

A lottery ticket, a hooker, a thief.

Always signifying a beginning or end,

Always offering a touch of misery or relief.

Destiny rides the crest of a wave,

Anxious to meet its approaching shore.

Often destiny’s route with rubble paved,

Awaken us to new hardships and more.

Destiny always makes its claim,

Even if it never seems to be there.

A phantom marauder without any name,

To take up residence in its private lair.

For now, the tolling of the bell continues,

The bright lights of a life do still shine.

Its perennial music echoes in our sinews,

Destiny may own us; but life’s beauty mine.

Destiny can threaten to darken our horizon, but it's our choices that control our lives. Wise words.

Ah, destiny! A most controversial subject in my mind. I think the only true destiny is in the birthing and the dying. What lies between, like karma, is in constant flux. Over the past couple of months I've become quite good at saying 'I reject that!" when I feel myself slipping back toward the darkness that seemed to be my destiny. I finally learned how to fight back. Enjoyed this.

Your closing stanza contains the kind of thinking that disuades victimization and promotes reality as a phenomena of our own making. Great write.
