-- Cast Me Harshly --
John Herlihy
Cast me harshly, call my name,
Into a dark, sinister night.
Branches scratch my windowpane,
The room shadows don’t feel right.
I lay there weak and lame,
Alone with no one in sight.
No one is there to blame,
Only me with this terrible blight.
What is there to remain,
Only my fear feels right.
How my hope to sustain,
From where to gather might.
Sick, scared, and in shame,
In that deep, dark night.
-- Cast Me Gently --
John Herlihy
Cast me gently
Into the budding dawn
Light motes arrive mercifully,
My newfound hope reborn.
Night bids farewell silently
I am no longer feeling forlorn
Touch me tenderly
The night was unkind
Lift me swiftly
From the depths of my mind
The shadows disappear steadily
Impatient, the incoming morn
Cast me gently
Into the new day born

Still, taken from the standpoint of metaphor, I think these two poems beautifully illustrate the dawn following a dark night of the soul. A time of fear and pain giving way to miraculous hope.
