-- Lightness of Spirit --
John Herlihy
A true lightness of spirit can be the lightest thing,
As lightness of feathers bears birds aloft in spring.
Yet, a lightness of spirit can also be a heavy thing;
Its stunning miracle will warning to the heart bring.
When it arrives, we feel heaven in its random taste,
To fly as an arrow thru wind with incredible haste.
We sometimes name it happiness, joy or even bliss;
When it vanishes in wind, we know what we miss.
What can we do but seize such joy when it arrives,
Cling to its life-worn edges for as long as it survives.
Herein lies the weight, a knowledge it will not last;
Light sparkles briefly, then fades into shadow vast.
We will await its return, with the world in tatters;
While waiting for its arrival, nothing else matters.
