-- Seeing Things --
John Herlihy
We think we see things with the eyes.
We come to see things with the mind.
To see things we may love or despise,
That inspires feelings of another kind.
Seeing pictures drawn into the eyes,
But felt somewhere deep in the heart.
The Images arrive with no compromise,
They won’t let go, imprinted as fine art.
Seeing some things for the first time,
A first time never to see as first again.
An experience I can call uniquely mine,
At least in the same way back when.
Seeing some things for the last time,
A last time seeing, never to see again.
Again, an experience allotted as mine,
A final offering that destiny doth send.
Seeing the things that give some hope,
Life can be difficult, often empty, bare.
In my mind’s eye, I see the divine rope,
Not just see, I climb it, escaping despair.
Seeing all the things that we did love,
To settle in the eyes beyond compare.
My heart filled by the peace of a dove,
Love gives vision to be brave, to dare.
Not just seeing, but seeing things lost,
Things we appreciate when finally gone.
Things that came to us with great cost,
If lost, we hear the echo of their song.
Then we see all the things that we miss,
One’s mother, one’s father, a loved one.
The innocence of the young, the first kiss,
Seeing the joy and sorrow in our life spun.
We may see things that we have forgotten,
Things take on new life when remembered.
In remembering, we do feel newly begotten,
Honestly felt, not as something pretended.
Seeing things fresh every time remembered,
Bringing me to the brink of an emotion stark.
Vivid memories fade when left to be forgotten,
When I see them again, l listen carefully, hark.
Then we see through things into the invisible,
Waiting patiently to be seen behind the veil.
To see the throbbing heart behind the visible,
Light upon light that lies just beyond the vale.
We thank God’s providence for this gift of sight,
That in learning to see, we can see much more.
All thru a clear day and far into the dark night,
Wherever you turn, there the Creator to adore.
