-- Thanksgiving --

John Herlihy

Blessings of which we have no control,

A day to play in our lives a special role.

Anticipation that brings us fully awake,

The day trails autumn light in its wake.

A day when we set aside any despair,

A day that moves forward as a prayer.

The pumpkin’s face glows an inner fire,

The harvest do feelings of hope inspire.

In life, we have much to be thankful for,

Satisfied what we have, no need for more.

A succulent bird with all the trimmings,

To be content in this day of new beginnings.

By evening, the pumpkin eyes flicker and fade,

The day will soon end, as we into darkness wade.

This day to kneel in thanks as we know we must,

In God and His blessings do we put our trust.

A heartfelt dedication to the day that although of altered image this year nevertheless, represents a time when we give ourselves permission to move from the fast lane and enjoy the slow lane where the senses can be given some freedom to be our most treasured gift.
