-- A Soft Touch --

John Herlihy

I am what could rightly be called a soft touch;

Even if much may escape me, I know that much.

At the sight of an elderly person, I extend a hand;

Letting people fend by themselves but a reprimand.

When those in need ask for money, I never say no;

God knows their need, how they spend it I never know.

As a writer, people often need my help, I am exploited;

If my helpful service makes them happy, I feel anointed.

The knowing smiles of my students only gives them away;

They know full well I will never their just grade betray.

I am especially vulnerable to children’s smiles and tears;

I feel their child-like sorrows and suffer their little fears.

If I be a soft touch, I wouldn’t have it any other way;

Freely giving gives freely in return, never having to pay.

Of confessional poems, I like yours among the best. For in your confessing you have warmed my heart with your meek, but powerful attitude toward life. During the Great Depression, the homeless would have placed a white paint mark on your curb, declaring you a "easy mark." Not a bad thing, but a really good thing in a time like this was so many people going hungry from lack of work.

I don't know about the Koran, that in the Bible the Beatitudes it states that "the meek shall inherit the earth." I sure hope so. It's about time everyone was like you.

God created us freely and we need to remember that the more we give freely the more it is returned tenfold, the Universe is hung by stars that give freely their light, thank you for sharing dear John, Merry Christmas from my heart.

You give the reader certain hints here of being humanitarian John- loving, sensitive, willing to help, or give, altruistic, and sensitive to the suffering of innocents. Thanks for sharing. r

Lest any reader forgets, we need more soft-touch people like yourself, for our brittle and often impenetrable armor-protected mindset is slowly reducing our humanness to other-earthlyness. For this time of year, this is a welcome New Years' resolution concept. Kudos.
