-- Vorfreude --

John Herlihy

What rapture lies glowing in Vorfreude,

The joy that gathers in anticipating joy,

Children feel it in their crevices and seams.

Without even knowing what it really means,

The sensation gathered like water in a sieve.

Purifying the heart, in a pure impulse to live,

Not the thoughts of a frantic mind that speaks.

But the pulsating beats of a heart that seeks,

Like the shadows of twilight ever-lengthening.

The mystery of happiness ever-strengthening,

The emotion, a welcome stranger, ready to meet.

The presence of a yet unknown joy ready to greet,

Vorfreude, my dear Vorfreude, finding its own way.

May its golden light stream thru the joy of the day,

WELL, YOU CERTAINLY GOT ME. I HAD NO IDEA WHAT THE TITLE MEANT. AND BECAUSE I DIDN'T, I DID NOT 'CONNECT' LINE ONE WITH ONE TWO...SO, I GOOGLED IT, OF COURSE. AND YES INDEED, YOU ARE PERFECTLY RIGHT...'ANTICIPATION' IS SO NECESSARY IN THE PROCESS OF EMBRACING AND APPRECIATING TOTAL PERFECTION IN MOST THINGS. ENJOYED AND THANK YOU, JOHN. Such is the joy of John Herlihy when anticipating his next journey of geographic exploration merging with its metaphor of inner ecstatic thrill in the process of planning and execution. Much like your poetry, my friend. Vorfreude, indeed.

Very uplifting, at a time when we really need it.

All of us are living in the present. We only remember the past, and we can only 'anticipate' the future. For most, our worst fears, and our most cherished hopes, lie in our anticipations. It's best when anticipation and hope are born twins. Thank you for sharing. rlc
