-- The Fellowship of Time and Eternity --
John Herlihy
Eternity can seem so infinitely near,
Whereas time can seem so infinitely far.
A butterfly on our shoulder held dear,
Time never as consoling as a distant star.
Eternity can seem so infinitely sweet,
Whereas time can seem so infinitely sour.
In the Divine embrace of God to meet,
The minutes at our throat in the hour.
Eternity can seem so infinitely unending,
Whatever happens, there is still more.
Whereas time always seems to be ending,
So much happens never to happen more.
A communion of the flesh and the spirit,
This world sometimes up against the next.
The flesh rewarded by the spirit thru merit,
In the clutch of time alone we are perplexed.
Why live in shadows instead of living in light,
Like little lost waifs sorry and confused.
Why seek only the darkness of the night,
As if from responsibility, we can be excused.
There is a mirror reflection in shadows,
Just as a sweet geometry exists in light.
Storm clouds produce colorful rainbows,
As an infinity of stars illuminate the night.
The coldest rock recalls the fire of creation,
Glaciers are born in the flow of earth’s springs.
Eternity gives way to earthly time on probation,
As the arrows of time glide of feathered wings.
Time gives no recourse but to face the moment,
On bended knees in the dirt and the sawdust.
In facing the reality, we have nothing to lament,
Time will always give way to eternity, as it must.
Therein lies the unfathomable mystery of fellowship,
We understand the meaning of time in our lives.
But with a sense of eternity lies our true kinship,
Time runs its course, only God’s eternity survives.
