-- Waiting for the Stars --
John Herlihy
A gentle breeze rose on this clear night,
A total darkness obliterated all the light.
The lazy moon, now waning, not yet risen,
As if by magic, darkness flowed thru a prism.
Where are the stars, I thought, with a shudder,
Speechless, I gazed overhead, no word to utter.
In roaming the heavens, we take them for granted,
Their sacred oath fills our hearts as psalms chanted.
Not possible, where have our glorious stars gone,
Where the ancient, celestial melodies of their song.
Now even the darkness blurred through my tears,
Shed for the starlight that has shone thru the years.
Without those pulsing stars, night isn’t even night,
Haunting blackness without those beauties of light.
I will wait all night for these harbingers of mystery,
That have watched over the earth all thru history.
