-- My Little Treasures --

John Herlihy

Oh, how deep the attachment of our little treasures;

How meaningful the mystery of our little pleasures.

How I treasured the comfort of my childhood teddy;

 When I could finally lay him aside, I knew I was ready.

One Christmas, my heart was set on getting a toy train;

Of the train’s smoke stack and puffs, nothing remains

A much loved bicycle, my desired treasure had to be red;

My joy rides were many, until replaced by a car instead.

As life went on, I began to travel more and treasure less;

A vagabond’s life allows nothing superfluous I do confess.

A feather, a favorite bookmark, gathered out and about;

Treasured simplicities I thought I could never do without.

A fire finally destroyed what little treasures still remained;

Set free of all my past treasures that still kept me chained.

INDEED, WHETHER THEY ARE STILL WITH US IN PHYSICAL FORM OR NOT...WE STILL REMEMBER THE 'LITTLE TREASURES' OF OUR YOUTH. THIS REMINDED ME...I CAN STILL REMEMBER MY FIRST CHINA TEA SET THAT WAS GIVEN TO ME...AS A CHRISTMAS GIFT IN CHILDHOOD. WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THIS 'TREASURE', I HARDLY KNOW. WONDERFUL, JOHN! LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

It is amazing how much of your life this short poem reveals. Little treasures like my cigar box of "jewels" and rare marbles, and coins. The snakes we picked up on the hillside that we could carry in our pockets. I never was much for gathering treasures. And can't recall a young childhood comforting blanket or teddy bear. I was always a macho guy that didn't need comforting things with a twin brother that I had to keep safe from what was under the bed or in the closet. ;-)

I guess a fire would remove all of those so-called treasures that we collect in a lifetime. I just hope something really valuable, especially in regard to history, wasn't lost.

I have a particular problem with hanging on to stuff. Probably because I grew up something of a vagabond who was never allowed to keep much of it.

Amazing how we form such attachments to things when we are young, but as we row older we learn to live in the moment and appreciate the things we have on hand, I think the closer we get to our mortality the more we realize that the important things we cannot lose are the things we hold in our memory and hearts. Thank you for sharing such a deep meaningful poem. I always treasure your insights, Happy Easter, dear poet friend. :)

There are so many arresting insights in this poem that my trying to find the most important message is difficult and would seem impossible to others like me who are in their reflection, as well as enjoying later years of still working for a living as a big contributor to my own happiness, and my wife's. That's what struck me on this one, even as I put in 45 to 50 hours a week to pay the bills, I still find time to reflect in a similar way as you have with this wonderful tapestry of life's threads woven so expertly and elegantly into a new whole. Even with fire (I've suffered through losing my home in Park City with everything gone) I know such losses. But, even with the fire, you've retained reflective gems in your mind, coupled with talent to poeticize same, you are fortunate to have such an ability. Write on.

In the Whirlwind by Tichaona Chinyelu

In the Whirlwind is a poetic storm that frees history from the cages of corruption and puts it in the hands of everyday people. Words are weaved into a new fashion statement that has nothing to do with runways but everything to do with projects!
