MIRROR POEMS
-- Never the Same --
John Herlihy
Throughout our lives,
We are never the same.
The changing body survives,
Not even memories remain.
Born with native personalities,
That change with whim and wind.
We are ever-changing mysteries,
Relying on what our lives lend.
Never imagine the child as old,
Never imagine the old as a child.
Each has a unique story told,
The child winsome, the old mild.
Mountains same under unique skies,
Much more than we ever realize.
-- Always the Same --
John Herlihy
Throughout our lives,
We are always the same.
The enduring soul survives,
A few memories remain.
Born with clear personalities,
Constant, fixed, and firm.
We are abiding mysteries,
Their revelations to learn.
The child displays a wisdom old,
The old man again as a child.
Oner story faithfully told,
Years as step-stones compiled.
Yes, in life, always the same,
I was here, this was my name.
