-- The Face of an Infant --
John Herlihy
There it peacefully lies,
A fallen angel in repose.
From where came those eyes?
Nobody can rightly suppose.
Wrapped up in bliss,
Poetry still not written.
Nothing yet to miss,
By light of stars bidden.
The infant soul beaming,
Just lying there in wait.
Like flower petals unfolding,
Patience passes thru a gate.
Such innocence captured,
In a silence most profound.
The onlookers feel enraptured,
A revelation without sound.
The infant makes its claim,
The world held in thrall.
Singularity is its name,
No one else compares at all.
The face already brave,
This new world to greet.
Loneliness too in its cave,
Life’s journey lies at its feet.
Created with loving precision,
Fashioned by a Hand sublime.
From another world, this vision,
An infant reflecting light divine.
