-- The Finality of the End --
John Herlihy
A finality lies in an ending that cannot be overlooked;
The ending arrived with no more passing to be brooked.
Sorrow appears at the end of an affair as in the end of life;
Something has been severed, cut away by a sharp knife.
We didn’t see it coming, the end never seems very near;
When it does finally arrive, nothing is held more severe.
At first, feelings of disbelief, as in this isn’t happening;
Let us put an end to this ending, as if still pretending.
Time passes over an ending like water passes over a shell;
As if the entire world ending, yet time still has a story to tell.
With every ending comes the feeling that time has run out;
The shutter closed, the light extinguished, there is no doubt.
But everything is temporary, even the end will pass away;
While a premonition is left behind, portending a new day.

You and I know that the only practical way to live beyond death is to have fame or infamy. Unfortunately, so much of those we remember in history were vile, evil people like Genghis Khan, raping his way across Asia so that his genes are in most of us today. I wouldn't advise anyone to do evil things as a legacy, but it is far easier than doing it legitimately.

Your words ring so true…
‘Time passes over an ending like water passes over a shell’…
Such a soothing line…
and time still has its story to tell…
There is something so natural and inevitable that you have captured within your words…and ‘ even the end will pass away’…
A fine, considered poem…
