-- Good Night, My Friend --

John Herlihy

Strange but we never take the night for granted,

Too many mysteries are entwined within the darkness.

Night comes calling upon the world an uninvited guest,

The blanket of darkness from infinities of outer space.

Strange but we never get used to the world at night,

It comes upon us whether we want it to come or not.

We never lose a child’s fear of what lurks in darkness,

The shadows are always there, especially in moonlight.

The night wind is the same as day wind, rustling leaves,

Moonlight never the same, waxing, waning, new or full.

The bright sunshine of morning so welcoming and bold,

The eerie footfalls in the darkness another story told.

The dawn of the world would never be the same,

Without the presence of the night to make itself known.

The great terrible sea of night envelopes trees and grass,

Night overcomes day, a different feeling, a different world.

For years, even since childhood, I always felt as an intruder,

Night shuts down the energy of the world with a lock and key.

The darkness of outer space lays a claim upon everything,

Rendering my familiar world unfamiliar, out of place in its midst.

I have the moon to thank for saving me from night’s embrace,

Shimmering moonglow nothing but borrowed light of the sun.

I thank the stars for appearing so the night will feel inviting,

An immemorial acquaintance to befriend rather than to fear.

A spirit lies within the night that is marked by the late hour,

When the soul finds connections to a deep sense of eternity.

The pre-dawn darkness marks the hour of night beyond night,

A presence beyond presence that speaks of ancient mystery.

In the dying hours of night, darkness at its greatest intensity,

Pitch dark as coal, and as ominous as the tolling of bells.

The hour when suddenly illumination pierces thru the darkness,

An awakening, as the world holds its breath to greet the dawn.

Good night, my friend, beyond the window as I close my eyes

You will be gone in the morning, no longer there to hypnotize.

I can see you are truly connected to the moon and the stars, There is no fear when we find that kind of solace in the night, Well done John,
Take care, be well. Vie

As it's known: 'dark matter' makes up 83% of the universe. Only 17% is light. This fact, and your thoughts, speak perhaps of a deeper spiritual truth. Enjoyed your thoughts. Peace.... rlc

Your words certainly tell the reader about feeling that the moon can cause.....the dark...night sounds...........harm or soothe. What a whimsical Lady Luna!! I must admit I am mindful of whether she is waxing or waning!

Love ya!

You have painted a somewhat fearful and negative view of nighttime, half of our existence. We need nighttime for rest. We have used modern lighting to fight back the night, but it hasn't helped us like sleeping the necessary number of hours to stay healthy.

I have always found night to be pleasant except perhaps when it was very cold and I couldn't keep. Otherwise I have good night vision and always enjoyed the night sounds of birds and animals in the dark.
