-- Breath of Soul --

John Herlihy

When we speak of the body,

We know what it is.

There in all its regal glory,

Animated by many nimble limbs.

When we speak of the mind,

We know what it is.

A labyrinth of brain tissue,

Reason and common sense to issue.

When we speak of the heart,

We know what it is.

A pump with valves filled with life blood,

Animating the emotions, especially love.

When we speak of the soul,

We never quite know what it is.

Who, what, where is it?

The answer: the air, the wind, the breath.

From the moment born till the time of death,

The body is animated by the soul’s breath.

The soul vapors ultimately take their leave,

Leaving behind the body for others to grieve.

Funerals are by their very nature places and times to mourn the loss of those who leave us. Yet, I've often found a secret comfort in the still emptiness of the body because it's so evident to me that they have been released.

AMEN, SO TRUE. THE SOUL IS LIFE AND NEVER DIES, IT IS THE BREATH OF GOD AND RETURNS TO HIM WHEN THE BODY DIES. GREAT FORM, THANKS. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

Both scientific and poetic. You and billions of others believe the soul is separate from the body that feeds it. That has been proven wrong a long time ago, but so many cling to it for some reason I don't know… Perhaps the comfort of certainty over the uncertain nature of what happens when we die.

I stick with science and proven fact. Our thoughts, the ones that generate our soul and spirit, reside in the brain and are enriched and maintained by blood flowing directly to the brain from the heart. When the brain no longer receives blood and the oxygen in it, our electric thoughts cease to be.

Aside from others who may be around and hear noises, and perhaps, smell gases coming from the body, that has been misinterpreted as soul escaping or communicating, etc., the soul dies with the body.

Interesting. In my experiences with other spiritually minded individuals, soul and spirit are often used interchangeably, but (IMO) they're not. The soul is the seat of the senses, desires affections appetites etc. The soul and spirit are connected, but are separable. The Spirit of a man is the immaterial part that connects, or refuses to connect, to God the Creator. Thank you for sharing. rlc

Haiku of a Wayward Sailor” encompasses both haiku and poems. Many of the haiku are based on my experiences at sea.
