-- The Eternal Paradox --

John Herlihy

Idle living is a question;

Focused living is an answer.

We act upon what we know;

We play act upon what we don’t know.

We believe in the reality;

But we don’t know what the reality is

We disbelieve the dream;

We do know what the dream is.

We all live by a measure of faith;

We all differ on the meaning of faith.

How fleeting is time;

Yet how time drags.

In the darkness of night,

We are longing for moonlight.

In the brightness of day,

We seek shadows amid the light.

The coming of dawn,

Speaks of renewal and ascent.

The coming of twilight,

Speaks of departure and descent.

The dark face of the storm

Portends fear and disaster.

The bright face of sunshine

Portends growth and hope.

The future is always arriving;

The past is always departing.

No matter how disconnected we feel;

We are all connected in fact.

In childhood, thirsting for fulfillment;

In old age, thirsting for redemption.

Paradox helps us understand;

The choices at our command.

The human paradox,

That we know nothing of what we know.

The eternal paradox,

That we know how little we do know.

YOU ARE RIGHT, JOHN AND THUS SCIENCE HAS A CONTINUOUS 'LUST'...TO MOVE FROM HERE...TO THERE...TO WHERE?!?!? WE NEED TO FIX THE MESS HERE FIRST, FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE...AN ETERNAL PARADOX, INDEED! THE ONLY THING ONE CAN BE SURE OF THESE DAYS IS...THERE IS A GOD WHO IS IN CHARGE OF EVERYTHING!!! ENJOYED. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

Yes we live in this paradoxical world, and daily
puzzle over the many things you describe…
…but the excitement is in pursuit of what it all
really means, and the nuances therein…
I enjoy the way you make us think John…
Thank you…an excellent mind provoking poem…

Absolutely John. The more you know, the less you know. It's certainly what I've learned. Another paradox: Water is fluid. Soft, and yielding. But water will wear away rock, which is rigid and cannot yield. As a rule, whatever is fluid, soft and yielding will overcome whatever is rigid and hard. This is another paradox: what is soft is strong. Enjoyed this. Peace... rlc

The best way to deal with this paradox you describe is to be willing to change when the evidence shows that we are wrong. That the reality we thought was right is no longer valid. Some very good points raised by this thoughtful poem.

I once knew a pair of ducks… But, never mind!

I love that word, "paradox." It's such a word for truth.
