-- All Night Long --

John Herlihy

All night long in the darkness unlit,

Dim stars shine forth as candles lit.

As quiet wind whispers thru leaves,

Breaking silence as darkness grieves.

Poor darkness: How it misses the day,

Even shadows end up losing the way.

Most lonely arrives the midnight hour,

Nothing to see from this ghostly tower.

Then, shyly, the moon specter has risen,

With borrowed light seen thru a prism.

To remind the night of its friend the day,

On the bright side of earth, on its way.

All night long in the darkness unlit,

Dim stars on its velvety cushion sit.

Lost and forlorn til the day returns.

All night long its dark heart yearns.

Wow. Beautiful juxtaposing of images, night and day, dark and bright, shadow and light. Opposites that balance, one in existence only because of the other. Wonderful!

How can Night feel lonely and forlorn with all those stars for companions? Sounds to me like Night is too obsessed with what it doesn't have to see what it does. A sad allegory that describes a trap we all fall into eventually.

A fine message. Everything celestial fascinates me. Especially in the high desert on a clear night. Some nice imagery in this John. Enjoyed. Thanx 4 sharing. rlc

I like the personification of the night the way it is expressed. Darkness grieving and a shy moon are examples. However, I find darkness exciting and the moon rather dead and pale.
