 -- Beside Still Waters --

John Herlihy

There I stand,

I am not sure where.

The future before me,

Wondering, I stare.

There I stand,

Unsure what to do.

Never did understand,

Things I never knew.

There I stand,

Many questions arise.

Go ahead, ask them,

The fear, the surprise.

There I stand,

Before the flood.

Swirling in the waters,

Rubble, debris, mud.

There I stand,

Before the deluge.

Beckoning in command,

Offering no refuge.

There I stand,

Before the abyss.

Already knowing,

What I will miss.

There I stand,

Ready to leap.

Into still waters,

That run so deep.

There I stand,

In sunset bright.

As if planned,

The coming of night.

There I stand,

In these silent quarters.

I breathe, I listen,

Beside still waters.

Trusting and having faith is not easy, but all we need do is listen and be. Beautiful imagery created by your well-chosen words. They tell a powerful story that reminds me of dwelling in the mystery. Wonderful poem.

Reminiscent of Psalm 23:2. The spiritual subtext in this is axiomatic. Good imagery. Enjoyed. Peace... rlc

We get through the tumultuous times by reflection during the times of peaceful placid waters. Without them we would be doomed. Always one step behind what is happening. Instead of being out ahead as result of thinking through what could?

Although I may be stretching your meaning, I find myself viewing an inner self, rather than an outer world of happenings. Many a time similar thoughts have carried me to the dark and the waters, both rapids, and the still murkiness of flotsam. Yet, in my similar trip, I managed to always find the light, often in the past, just an overhead lightbulb I chose to pull the chain to bring me out of reverie and into the world I was still alive in. Anyway, I digress. Your images and timeline of experience are well worded and will mean different things to different people, I'm sure. It's all good.
