-- The Brevity of Time --
John Herlihy
The brevity of the hour
Measured by pace of seconds.
This hour’s span of time
Gone before anyone reckons.
The brevity of the day
Measured by length of the hour.
We then our efforts weigh
As the petals of a flower.
The brevity of the month
Counted by specific days.
Their disappearance blunt
The days go separate ways.
The brevity of the year
Found in months seasonal.
Each offer their own cheer
Winter chill, summer reasonable.
The brevity of the Divine Day
Contained within a thousand days.
If time could have its say
Emotions expressed a thousand ways.
No matter how long time may take,
When finished, it seems all too brief.
Hours, days, years all seek to create,
The brevity of time to escape as a thief.

I guess I've always been a futurist, looking ahead to what will be and amazed when I find out what actually happens like Marshall McLuhan's "global village" that is closely approximated by the Internet today. I also found that as a futurist I am constantly looking backward in time to the past, trying to find out how people actually lived, that the Kings and Queens, lords and ladies, but the real people and what their lives were like. What led to the great innovations that we find so easy to use today, while blaming anything going wrong on politics instead of ourselves.
