-- Thoughts on Infinity –

John Herlihy

As we gaze pensively into the night sky,

The feeling akin to gazing at the infinite.

We ponder, we question, and ask why,

As we sit here in the world of the finite.

This vast, infinite world hardly accessible,

Even our world seems excessively large.

The horizon makes our world definable,

Moving thru the heavens as a river barge.

The word infinite never to be quantified,

Always there in the distance out of reach.

Beyond the rim of the horizon sanctified,

A concept held in awe worthy to beseech.

The nighttime stars as tiny specks of dust,

Like flames catching on the cosmic wick.

A harvest sun setting in the color of rust,

In contrast, earth as small as a wood chip.

Thoughts of eternity conjure another story,

We measure time with the passing of days.

To live forever as endless moments of glory,

Leaving us breathless, our heads lost in haze.

Our world is as a drop in an infinite ocean,

Time is nothing but a convenient measure.

Infinity held in awe as some mystical potion,

While eternity is held as an eternal treasure.

As for us, we still have the stars, the night,

The eye of the moon in phases, beckoning.

The sight of infinity fills hearts with delight,

We fearless fireflies roam as lanterns of light.

You took on a subject here that serves one's sense of being in so many ways. As your subtext alludes, infinity comes in many aspects. I often think of our synaptic frenzy as like our infinite universe, seeming to have no end... until the end. Enjoyable and arresting write.

Given the Japanese flavor of your image, I read this with a Zen mindset. Well.... the best I could anyway. Awakening to this present instant, we realize the infinite is the finite of each instant. Another thought-provoking write Sir John. Enjoyed... r
