-- Earth’s Color –
John Herlihy
I wanted to compose a beautiful poem,
Verses with the lyrics of a sacred hymn.
But the world wrote a poem on its own
As poets through nature’s beauty roam.
To write with the ink of the heavenly sky,
To translate into words the reasons why.
A calligraphy of worship in shades of blue,
To draw from some inner well all I knew.
Then realize that the world untranslatable,
To capture its vaulting spirit unachievable.
Such beauty only dreamed of and touched,
As all our human pretensions are crushed.
Earth’s color spilled from the Divine Pen,
The poet thinks only of where and when.

The most amazing thing to me, is how thin our atmosphere is. Just a thin layer of nitrogen, oxygen and carbon dioxide, with a few other trace gases thrown in that everything on earth breathes. And we are now feeling, although you cannot see it from space, our wasteful polluting and misuse of this life source, like our water.
