-- Seeing Through Oneself –

John Herlihy

I have never worn any jewelry,

So as not to attract and encourage

Undue attention to myself.

I speak briefly and listen carefully,

So as not to attract and encourage

Undue attention to myself.

I understate myself and never boast,

So as not to attract and encourage

Undue attention to myself.

I work hard and get things done,

Hoping this does not attract and encourage

Undue attention to myself.

The wind blows unseen thru the trees,

So as not to attract and encourage

Undue attention to itself.

Snow descends silently in the winter night,

So as not to attract and encourage

Undue attention to itself.

Stars shine forth mysteriously from ages past,

So as not to attract and encourage

Undue attention to themselves.

The moon moves in phases, waxing and waning,

So as not to attract and encourage

Undue attention to itself.

I wrap myself in mountains, clouds, the sky,

So as not to attract and encourage

Undue attention to myself.

The earth moves but we see not the movement,

So as not to attract and encourage

Undue attention to itself.

The sun seems to move by rising and setting,

Seemingly to attract and encourage

Undue attention to itself.

We all have one life, one opportunity,

To focus on this timely experience

Without drawing undue attention to ourselves.

This bowl of tea a universe in my palms,

I smell, then gently sip its delicate liquid

Hoping not to call undue attention to myself.

This poem makes no false claim,

Therefore, it sees through itself

And draws no undue attention to itself.

Every moment a unique moment in life,

To lose oneself in imagining, in waiting, in seeking

For whatever fills the soul essence of myself.

To realize the moment by being in the moment,

This life, this opportunity, to see thru oneself

Thereby laying waste to any undue attention to myself.

THERE ARE EYES THAT PIERCE US THROUGH AND THROUGH, WHICH SEES AND KNOWS US BETTER THAN WE COULD EVER KNOW OR SEE OURSELVES. IF WE CAN LEARN(AT 77 I AM STILL 'LEARNING')TO RELY ON THE GUIDING LIGHT OF 'HIS' EYES THEN WE NEVER NEED WORRY ABOUT ANY ATTENTION BEING BROUGHT TO OURSELVES THAT 'HE' HAS NOT PREDESTINED. LOVED IT, JOHN, THANKS! LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

You live humbly. Many people like to stay humble so as not to attract too much attention from others. Yet, there are some others who would like to show off how good they are at their self-importance, even at the expense of irritating other people for no reason.
