-- He Who Watches --

John Herlihy

I am a watcher, he who watches,

Eyes opened wide, attention to detail.

Ever witnessing, revealing secret messages,

Mysteries to be explored that will avail.

I am a listener, he who listens,

To hear tales of others, always revealing.

Filling me with insight, each word glistens,

Treasures of another life, as if stealing.

I am the communicator, the poet who writes,

Thoughts and motions from the pen willingly spill.

Many random thoughts, a few petals as insights,

When asked whether, I answer, “I wonder, still!”.

I am the shadow, he who shadows,

I leave for others to shine in the light.

A sheltering grace in the shadow of willows,

I hear deeper tones in the darkness of night.

I am the rememberer, he who remembers,

In life, to ever abide by the one thing needful.

To follow the destiny of one who surrenders,

Truth made manifest to those who are heedful.

I am the questioner, he who questions,

If we don’t bother to ask, we will never know.

When, where, why, how, each word beckons,

With all the mystery and intrigue of falling snow.

I am the whisperer, he who whispers,

As stars wheel across the greatness of night.

Sitting there all alone, listening in my slippers,

May my prayer be heard in the fields of starlight.

I am the lover, he who loves,

My heart ablaze in love’s fire, burning.

Such emotion as rides the wings of doves,

My soul, in white light, forever yearning.

I see the light, a Spirit who enlightens,

A white radiance with promise of potential.

Beyond the face of things, everything brightens,

Aa shadows disappear amid the one thing essential.

You have revealed much of yourself in this open expression of your taking in and sharing of life through your poetry. Very well presented!

If you're talking about yourself here, John, I'm impressed. Especially that you can do it so openly. If it's not about you.... then I feel you've created a great character, that one could construe as a man of God, who walks a solitary path. Then again, maybe you're talking about Allah. Very uniquely cogitated. Peace.... rlc
