-- The Solemnity of the Day --
John Herlihy
Certain days throughout the year,
Bring with them an aura of solemnity.
Good Friday, the death of Jesus, a tear,
The resurrection’s message of mystery.
Birthday, the day a person was born,
A celebration of life and of destiny.
From the mystery of existence torn,
Thanks to God’s blessing and mercy.
The joyousness of Independence Day,
The day to signify what freedom means.
The heart finally uncaged, never to betray,
As night accepts the glow of moonbeams.
The first day of the new year rings solemn,
We commemorate it with a toast and a kiss.
We fill our hearts with resolutions as an omen,
Of all the days that may come, filled with bliss.
The solemnity of the day begins with the dawn,
First light bids farewell to the darkness of night.
In taking its leave, the night welcomes in the morn,
Night’s darkness willing to surrender to the light.
Indeed, the day still rings solemn at the fall of dusk,
Night’s shadows pitter-patter behind the day’s light.
The wind whispers secrets, the earth smells of musk,
The day blends seamlessly into the solemnity of night.
