-- All Those Musical Instruments --

John Herlihy

All those musical instruments fill me with tears,

To empty heart’s cup of those tremors and fears.

No one dare contest the versatility of the piano,

From its base-sounding cords to lyric pianissimo.

The subtle lute as lilting rhythms in courts medieval,

Born of a wooden body hollowed in realms primeval.

The violin known of course for plucking heart strings,

The harmonica known to be the very heart that sings.

Who doesn’t muse at the lush strumming of the guitar,

Drift into eerie regions of the mind with the lone sitar.

Percussion thunders thru me in the beating of a drum,

Or the music of a hummingbird with wings that hum.

The flute, ah the lonely flute, stirs feelings of love lost,

Echoed by the voice of the wind with breaths of frost.

MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS WERE MADE TO BRING FORTH SOUNDS THAT TOUCH OUR HEARTS. SO IT IS... WITH MUCH ADMIRATION AND PRAISE THAT I THANK THE HOLY SPIRIT, THAT 'TEACHER' OF ALL THINGS, WHICH INCLINED THE MINDS AND HANDS OF THOSE THROUGH WHICH 'HE' CREATED ALL THOSE INSTRUMENTS OF MUSIC...HUMAN AND OTHERWISE. THANK YOU, JOHN. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

I think we often underestimate the profound impact these instruments can have on our psyche’s…Their music can completely alter our mood, sometimes drawing out deep and soul searching thoughts, or exalting us to ultimate joy! Stimulating hormones of Serotonin and Dopamine are also released at these times from the brain to further enhance our mood…
We can also be calmed from stress, and inspired to be creative…
I was inspired to write a poem whilst listening to ‘OLTREMARE’ by Ludivico Einaudi…it was a very different result from what I expected….
The individual instruments all have their own charm and energy…affecting our emotions as you point out…Interestingly, Harp is said to be the most relaxing and calming is the Harp…
The whole subject is fascinating….Thank you for reawakening this interest. A most enjoyable poem…

Wonderful painting, and a moving message in this John. I imagine, gathering together all the instruments, you've mentioned, into one ensemble, would produce quite a unique coloration of sound, chords, and contrapuntal lines. Peace.... rlc
