-- Tender is the Night --
John Herlihy
We think of the moon caressing the night,
Sprinkling on limbs and leaf beads of light.
We think those stars lend airs of mystery,
Spread as diamonds across a darkened sea.
We think the moon enters the night’s dark,
This ancient sickle to never even hurt a lark.
Rising nobly into the heavens in clear stages,
Waxing or waning in the book of life’s pages.
We think of silence in the midnight hour,
No whisper, no breath, only subtle power.
The night holds such treasures tender, mild,
To snuggle in night’s arms as trusting child.
We think of night as a primal source of fear,
Harsh darkness that cuts the heart as a spear.
We think night at the mercy of these things,
As a bird relies on wind to uplift its wings.
In truth, night cradles the stars, and moon,
Allowing them entrance into its dark room.
By day, these noble artifacts simply disappear,
Hidden by veils of light that in the day appear.
The night serves as mystical darkness laid bare,
Eyes open, eyes closed, into darkness we stare.
In dawn’s first light, night whispers ‘sleep now,’
As it fades without protest into light somehow.

Like you, I love the night sounds and the way warm, humid nights feel. But just as well, the way that bitter cold nights feel as long as I am properly bundled so that I can walk through snow and ice that glitters in the night like it doesn't in the day.
Thanks for bringing fond memories to my thoughts in the day today. Making me wish I could throw off all the city lights to once again walk in natural light at night.
