-- Imperfect Memory --

John Herlihy

in remembering and forgetting

our memories are imperfect

sometimes we remember

sometimes we forget

sometimes we remember to remember

sometimes we forget to remember

sometimes we remember to forget

sometimes we forget to forget

in remembering, we don't forget

in forgetting, we don't remember

memories ache when we remember

memories painless when we forget

in remembering, we cease to forget

in forgetting, we cease to remember

we remember without wishing

we forget things by wishing

we remember certain things

we forget certain things

in forgetting, how sad

in remembering, how free

Most of the times I have selected memories. I only wanted to remember the good ones. The bad ones I would leave them behind in the past. That's where they belong.

So true! I was in a dilemma today by thinking my doctors appointment was today only it was yesterday and I showed up blowing my mind, however they had mercy! Thoughtfully penned write John):

As we age, I guess our brain is constantly shuffling things around, trying to make sure that important memories are kept and unimportant memories are discarded like peoples' names we haven't used for a while but suddenly need to recall.

As your poem shows us, the act of remembering requires forgetting. Why I'm grateful for records on the computer and searches so that I can get the facts straight about something I remember from long ago but could't flesh out accurately because I have forgotten so much.
