-- The River of Life –
John Herlihy
We are as waters in flowing rivers,
The current appearing, passing by, disappearing.
We are as the flakes of falling snow,
Powdery, feathery, transitory, unique of their kind.
We are as the mystery of the night sky,
A blank slate speckled with starlight and moonglow.
We are as the depths as the oceans and seas,
A world within a world, fathomless, bottomless.
We are as beings floating thru time,
No future or past, only the bullseye of the present.
We leave behind a groove in stone,
A story etched on the walls of a canyon.
We are as rational beings of mind,
Winter thoughts anointed by summer warmth.
We are as emotive beings of the heart,
Sacred sentiments tinged with recurring sorrows.
We are as human beings animated by the soul,
The brilliance of light creating intricate shadows.
We are the beings of memory and remembrance,
Ever memorable and ever forgetful.
We are the beings of intention,
Ever hopeful and ever regretful.
We are the beings of purpose,
Every meaningful and ever meaningless.
We are the beings of strength,
Ever powerful and ever powerless.
We are the beings of fickleness,
Ever expendable and ever egotistical.
We are the beings of imagination,
Ever delectable and ever deplorable.
We are the beings of communication,
Ever relatable and ever unrelatable.
We are the beings of mirth,
Ever joyful and ever sorrowful.
We are the beings of knowledge,
Ever factual and ever noteworthy.
We are beings of mystery,
Ever knowable and ever unknowable.
We are beings of light,
Ever truthful and ever unfathomable.
We are the image of a Higher Reality,
Omni-present and omni-purposeful.
We are the mirror-reflection of this Image,
Ever faithful and ever trustful.
