-- DUSK LIES IN THE DAWN –

John Herlihy

The dawn – ever faithful, never the same,

First light flows thru a crack of night’s door.

The morning heralded by dew on the plain,

Soon dawn light will wash over earth’s shore.

Without warm sun, dawn dew will linger,

Gems of the night born as nocturnal dews.

Midnight tears gathered by nature’s finger,

Falling on leaves and blooms as life renews.

Today’s dawn rises like dusk from the night,

Pale and milky, no flaming sun to hold its hand.

Premonitions of end accompany the feeble light,

Shadows of cloud move silently across the land.

A dawn of whispers heard in the rustling leaf,

The country brook murmurs amid the stones.

An adagio of light sounds as fading stars weep,

The symphony of day begins amid hushed tones.

The breath of the morning a sweet inhalation,

Accompanied by the chattering of the birds.

The breath of the evening a sad exhalation,

Bird chatters sounding as discontented words.

Just as dawn passes through morning’s gates,

Showing the earth with its misty light of pearl.

The nightingale the dimming of the day awaits,

Discovering in the dusk its own dawn to unfurl.
