-- SONG OF DREAMS AND DRUMS –
John Herlihy
The song of dreams and the sound of drums;
The cricket saws as the hummingbird hums.
If we turn blind, we can still read by braille;
Nothing and no one can ever hamper the tale.
Promises and incantations echo in the night;
The weeping willows dusted by moonlight.
The whisper of voices never before heard;
The mysterious meanings found in a word.
Cries in the night, speaking in a foreign tongue;
A storied tapestry from dust motes and light spun.
Sleeping birds in their nests sweet nothings to say;
Whales in ocean waters as mere feathers weigh.
The phases of the moon will run their course;
The richness of autumn’s harvest a living force.
The stork snugly nested in the church spire;
A waltzing penguin dressed in its dapper attire.
The drumming of the heart never misses a beat;
Butterflies in the garden searching for nectar sweet.
In the willingness to believe lies the seeds of hope;
The mountain peak protected by a slow-rising slope.
Childhood being the one thing always left behind;
While old age should only be called a state of mind.
There beyond the horizon in the realm of yonder;
The drumming of dreams in our hearts to ponder.
