-- THE FINALITY OF DEATH –

John Herlihy

Why do people insist upon death as a finality?

When death’s door closes, no further reality.

No destination waiting at the end of the road;

Life but a solitary journey with no final abode.

Winter’s death is overcome by spring’s thaw;

That dawn follows dusk serves as universal law.

The trees lose treasured leaves under autumn’s sky;

Death of the caterpillar means birth of the butterfly.

Billions of galaxies filled with billions of stars;

Yet many live their lives as if in lidded jars.

Signs of death/rebirth on display everywhere,

Ignoring their message can lead to sure despair.

Our lives a moment in the span of eternity,

Earth but a dust mote in the realm of infinity.

Everything dies a death in order to be reborn,

The beauty of the rose protected by its thorn.

We wonder so much about life’s finality;

We wonder so little about life’s durability.

Even at the end, the future still lies in store,

A timely rebirth lies beyond death’s door.

THIS IS SO TRUE. FOR EVEN THOUGH DEATH ON EARTH IS FINAL, THAT IS... FOR OUR MORTAL BODIES, OUR IMMORTAL SOULS PASS ON TO A PREPARED ETERNAL PLACE WHERE EVEN THE FARTHEST DEPTHS OF OUR LIMITED MORTAL IMAGINATION...CANNOT BEGIN TO PHANTOM. SUCH A GRAND POETIC WORK, JOHN, THANK YOU! LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

I agree with everything you have said in this poem. That is why I don't look at death as a finality. I DO believe there is a place we all go to after we leave this world.

The proof is when my mother--in-law was dying she was calling every relative's name of those who had passed away, she said they were all there preparing a welcoming party for her. She called out their names, one by one, then the biggest surprise to us was when she called out her cousin's name of one who had just passed away a week ago before her! We were stunned! NO ONE HAD EVEN TOLD HER THAT COUSIN HAD DIED BECAUSE WE DID NOT WANT TO UPSET HER. But how could she know that her cousin was dead and was among the dead unless she actually saw her there and called out her name too?

This was phenomenal! I am a believer that there is another level of life after death.

Your poem reminds us there is always a new beginning to everything that passes. Thank you, John!

The poets' dream that our imagination creates. Other dimensions and other lives so clearly displayed in our dreams that become whole religions from a single powerful man's (very seldom a woman) dream of what could be after earthly death.

But all I have to do is look around at life everywhere that dies. The genes are transmitted as seeds or offspring to continue the line of genetic survival that is in all of us. But our spirit dies with the lack of blood to our brains and that is it. Very simple, but very hard for "believers" to accept.

Couldn't agree more, as existence is permanent. Our matter, be it dust or bones, will find its way into space and attach to its next iteration as life as we know it today may change, but existence has a way of surprising each and every day here. Think what it must be conjuring up to surprise the galaxies of perpetuity's meaning.

So true. I've had a couple of near death experiences in my life. I never feared dying. The only thing that bothered me was regret. What was on my mind were things I didn't say and the pain I knew it would have on my family. I think that I was given a second chance to correct those regrets. Write on.
