-- The Blind Night --
John Herlihy
Moonlight all-seeing,
But night truly blind.
Moonglow beaming,
In night’s dark mind.
Night touches land,
The earth trembles.
Using braille by hand,
A blind man resembles.
We cry into the night,
Swallowed by the wild.
Its savagery feels right,
By its mystery beguiled.
As if fallen into a void,
The night worn as cloak.
All the daylight destroyed,
Its dark depths to invoke.
In darkness, the night sees,
Thru stars, silence, smells.
Earth blinded on its knees,
As the night its story tells.
Blind night sees by touch,
Distant stars brought near.
Twinkling, they offer much,
Their soft caress held dear.
Stars from a great distance,
Speak gentle words, glisten.
Blind night with no resistance,
A silver pond and forest listen.
Day thought it never to end,
The sunlight to shine forever.
Yet night day’s lie did rend,
As dusk the day’s cords sever.
Night thought it never to end,
The starlight to shine forever.
Yet day night’s lie did rend,
As dawn night’s cords sever.
Moonlight all-seeing,
But night truly blind.
Moonglow beaming,
In earth’s dark mind.
