-- The Poet’s Poem –

John Herlihy

The poem bears eternal flame,

The poet’s wick burns down.

The poem suffers not the blame,

The poet only wears the frown.

The poem has a crackling spark,

The poet writes with a scratch.

The poem has an indelible mark,

The poet has only lit the match.

The poem rises on feathery wings

The poet’s anvil whispers a prayer

The poem’s rhythm gently sings

The poet’s words perfume the air

The poem shines a flaming lamp,

The poet’s mind serves as flint.

The poem casts its valued stamp,

The poet’s words give but hint.

The poem found by the poet,

The poet but lost in the poem.

The poet’s poem burns as flare,

The poet’s heart finally laid bare.

A FINE WORK JOHN...IMAGING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE POEM AND THE POET. FOR, WITHOUT QUESTION, THE POET BELONGS TO THE POEM AS MUCH AS THE POEM BELONGS TO THE POET. HOW WONDERFUL AND ENJOYED, THANK YOU JOHN.LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

beautiful! i love how you differentiated the poet and the poem. perfect last stanza as well especially the final line: the poet's heart finally laid bare.

The internalization of the poetic process is fashioned very effectively with the use of the chosen metaphors. There is a safe feeling given off by your allegory of possibility, for it might be argued that the novelist, the journalist, and the textbook author aren't required to bare the kind of intimacy that a minimum of words must convey in a poem. Such is what many refer to as the open wound bleeding out as the poet's plight.

Nicely expressed, John. I agree. Poetic expression is one of the very few places where people can speak their own original mind. It is the outlet for people to say in public what is known only in private to them. Thanks for sharing. Peace.... r
