-- The Music of Tears --

John Herlihy

The music of tears always snares my heart,

A lilting melody whose notes break apart.

For all those suffering a sorrowful lament,

Awash in grief in shadows of bereavement.

Set free all your tears in eyes overflowing,

Emotions feel more than a mind knowing.

Music springs forth in the rivers of tears,

Rippling onto soul ground over the years.

Sorrow as springs drawn from glacial melt,

The rain of heaven as dew drops gently felt.

Showering the gaiety of historic fountains,

Projecting severity of majestic mountains.

The sad harmonica with a melancholy tune,

In evening mist floats the sad cry of a loon.

Pianos find rich sadness in sounding cords,

The sweet misery disenchantment affords.

Heartfelt emotions heard in violin strings,

Tears of joy spring from a heart that sings.

Tearful music found in their watery grace,

As tears flow silently down upon the face.

Rivers of sound drawn from deep emotion,

That flow from our eyes as a magic potion.

The exquisite serenade of violin strings taut,

Doleful sentiments that were never sought.

Joyful tears in the heartbeats of jungle drums,

Whirring wings of a hummingbird that hums.

Tears as bubbles floating down facial streams,

Icemelt left behind in the grove of facial seams.

The music of tears turns sorrow into delight,

Luminous brightness in the depths of night.

Lullabies of courage and strength thru years,

Sung by a bird at dawn as the music of tears.

THE TEARS OF LIFE...FLOWS IN AS TEARS OF SORROW, JOY, DISAPPOINTMENT, RELIEF, CELEBRATION, COMFORT, LOSS, PLEAS, LAUGHTER, SATISFACTION, CONTENTMENT...ETC. SO MANY DIFFERENT KINDS OF TEARS AND, I GUESS ONE COULD LOOK AT THEM AS A SYMPHONY, THAT IS... MUSIC... PLAYED, HEARD THROUGHOUT THE COURSE OF OUR LIVING. SIMPLY GREAT! THANK YOU FOR SHARING, MY FRIEND. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

Wow! A truly masterful poem. Isn't it beautiful how we can feel so much with just a sound heard? I've noticed the wealth of wisdom in your words that only growing older and fully living life can provide. Youth may feel these things, but it is the master who renders such experiences into exquisite art that touches all who read it! Fine poem. Very fine poem.

Well written, John. Effective imagery. Certainly, as we all know, tears are a part of life. "A time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance." Thanks for sharing this. Peace.... r

Always drawn to references of music, I appreciate your coupling the sound with the sadness. The four lines that reach out the furthest to me are those beginning with the harmonica; “The sweet misery disenchantment affords.” What a great line! ~~ djl

There is nothing like music to touch the emotions…
bring back a certain time in your life…
If tears are near…music can tip the balance…
Tears of sadness tears of joy…
Tears that cleanse, tears that renew…there is
Music that do all of these things…and more..

A simply wonderful poem John!

Your poem here eloquently reveals your conviction about the tears of sorrow. The instrumentation images are apt and are excellent choices. Your last stanza allowing for the paradox of the tears turning to delight is so correct. Well done, as usual.
