-- Now in the Darkness –

John Herlihy

One quiet evening, I gazed on high

Far into the depths of the night sky.

At first, I see nothing but the dark,

I hear a fading echo of song, a lark.

Now in the darkness I see a light,

The first star that I see tonight.

At once, my fears all left behind,

All the worry emptied my mind.

Feelings of bliss my mind did fill,

With a fretful heart beating still.

Miracles when we least expect,

To banish our sense of regret.

Once unknowing, now I know,

A light in darkness, moonglow.

Luminous in the midnight hour,

Ghostly light touches the flower.

I enjoy this shortened style of poem better than your wringing every word out of a subject with your long poems. Except for the forced rhyme, "my mind did fill," well composed and coming nicely to the point.

this is beautiful, John. i love how the moonlight romances with the flower, made me wonder how inspired you were when you wrote this. thank you for this piece.

This melds together the photograph with your verse in a lovely way. It also creates an atmosphere of mysticism, the way the piece mixes vision with feeling. My favorite three lines start with "With a fretful heart beating still." That line carries so much dimension juxtaposing fretful with 'still beating.' Enjoyed this, John* ~~ djl

Another journey into your healing imagination. Yes, I too have often gazed into the darkness of the universe and found it akin to a visual chant as in Zen meditation. To connect it all as "ghostly light touches the flower" was the perfect ending. Liked it a lot, John.
