-- Some and Others – John Herlihy Some set out and accomplish so much, Precisely because they imaged and hoped for so little. Others set out and accomplished so little, Precisely because they imagined and hoped for so much. Some strived all their lives and never really succeeded, Precisely because they focused on their art and not their fame. Others didn’t particularly strive all their lives, yet succeeded, Precisely because they focused on fame and not on their art. Some profess to have no faith, yet in something they believe, Precisely because faith fills the hole created by life’s mystery. Others confess they have faith and firmly in something believe, Precisely because faith fills the hole created by life’s mystery. Some are ready to lie to fulfill their personal needs, Precisely because they value not others and only value themselves. Others never lie on purpose to fulfill their personal needs, Precisely because they value others as much as they value themselves. Some seek eminence thru an outward dignity of mien, Precisely because they lack inner authority and trust not themselves. Others seek no eminence but prefer to be true to themselves, Precisely because they bear an inner authority and trust themselves. Some prefer to brag and boast about themselves minutes to the hour, Precisely because their inner silence feels like hours to the minute. Others prefer to keep silent and listen minutes to the hour, Precisely because their inner silence feels the calm of the hours. Some avoid thoughts of death and think they will live forever, Precisely because they fear the unknown and deny its enduring reality. this is a magnificent piece. i love the way you look at things and take us through your perspectives. the last line gave me chills. bravo, John.

There is much philosophical reality in these opposing viewpoints expressed in each stanza. A well thought out piece that I enjoyed reading. Except for the last stanza that doesn't make any real sense. Death is inevitable and it is impossible to have died before dying. Perhaps people give up on life before dying. And perhaps that's what you mean.
