-- The Cloak of Anonymity --

John Herlihy

The cloak of anonymity I often easily wear,

Its air of invisibility comforting as a prayer.

The poet writes with no burden from fame,

Seen in the streets no one knows his name.

With no reputation that he must live up to,

He is free to write what his mind can spew.

Totally at ease in the middle of the crowd,

A tree in a forest, silent, nothing said aloud.

Waves of adulation, heaps of praise, more,

All waves to break apart on another’s shore.

Whispers he hears he writes down as words,

Ancient melodies that recall wisdom of birds.

All bound up in this frayed cloak of anonymity,

Touched by spirit breath, an enduring mystery.

TO BE SATISFIED WITH ONESELF...IS A JOURNEY. THERE IS A PLEASANT PEACE AND QUIETNESS IN ONE KNOWING WHO WE ARE, WITHOUT A...NEED...FOR ANYONE ELSE TO KNOW. WONDERFUL, JOHN! LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS.

I've always said I wanted to be anonymously famous. I'm still working toward that goal.

Deep truth of the often poet's inconspicuousness retreat upon the beautiful void

You have summed it up very well. We indie writers certainly go anonymous among the crowd of well-known poets and writers who get TV time and advances for their work.

Unfortunately, with my electric wheelchair, people remember me more for that than my writing. And they remember me longer because of that, and better than I remember them.

I love it when we can "spew our minds" without being noticed for it! ;-)

Anonymity allows a writer (especially one living alone) an easier opportunity to concentrate solely on writing. Perhaps that's good for some. But perhaps, also, it allows a person too much self-indulgence. I'm thinking social media's greatest assets (for modern writers) - anonymity, the viral aspects of it, and the state of being connected reciprocally - could also be its more insidious aspects. A thought-provoking philosophical piece, John, that I could expound on ad infinitum. Thanks. Peace... r
