-- Waiting for Night to Arrive --
John Herlihy
Disregarded, the night quietly slips away,
Banished by the dawn awakening the day.
Celestial light shines down on earth’s face,
Showering the land with its heavenly grace.
The world awakens with a sense of promise,
The day’s clarity and warmth offers solace.
Earthly souls awaken from nightly slumber,
Happy and sad souls in countless number.
The day marches forth full of hectic activity,
The harsh light allows for very little mystery.
Changing weather a measure of our moods,
The sun smiles, but the overcast sky broods.
Forget not the progress of the passing hours,
Each one making claims, demanding to be ours.
Morning freshness, then afternoon weariness,
Amid the rush, where be the day’s peacefulness.
Small wonder that something doesn’t feel right,
As we begin to await the sure coming of night.
Patiently we wait, with patience most beautiful,
Letting the day slip away with its demands dutiful.
We speak of the coming darkness as night fall,
Whereas the night arrives as a panther’s crawl.
On the far eastern horizon, the animal creeps,
As dark shadows thru the sieve of day seeps.
Sunset arrives, striking down the day with fanfare,
Twilight fills us with hush, at the horizon we stare.
The moment has arrived we have been waiting for,
The panther of night moves forward, paw by paw.
Sunset’s interlude echoes forth as a violin adagio,
Until night, in full dress, sings its basso profundo.
Darkness of outer space has swept over the land,
The night shutters fully drawn by the Divine Hand.
Seeing, feeling, being the night before anyone else,
There, at the very heart of things, beating as a pulse.
The darkness bejeweled by the moon, star galaxies,
Leading us along the Milky Way and all its mysteries.
Into these depths of darkness we do happily dive,
After waiting so patiently for the night to arrive.
To lay down in repose, awash in night’s tranquility,
To wander the darkened caves of night’s mystery.

Night is such a peaceful time and a time for reflecting. I know it’s unhealthy, but I usually stay
up till around 2 am, waiting for some sort of creativeness to come and join me in the quietness
Of thought.

On the other hand, I tend to enjoy a more simpler viewpoint like that old song… "When the deep purple falls over sleepy garden walls, and the stars began to come into view…"
