-- The Oneness of the Many --

John Herlihy

I see oneness in the singularity of the crowd;

In the field of multiplicity, a unity is allowed.

In schools of fishes, awed rhythm to behold;

In a swarm of bees, a story of diligence told.

The stars in the firmament moving in unison,

The multitudes of flowers in the garden wind.

A chorus of pine furs whispering their prayer,

Morning mist in the valley in forlorn despair.

Birds in flight mimic the swell of ocean waves,

The murmur of sleeping bats in mountain caves.

Morning dew speckles the grass in sheer delight;

Suns of the universe serve as beacons of light.

The ocean of the blue sky bespeaks of the One,

The ocean of primordial night bereft of the sun.

Monsoon rain drenches earth in silvery sheets;

Descending snowflakes a peaceful night greets.

Faint glow of dawn’s first light utters its creed

Shadows at sunset as prisoners of light freed

The willows bow to the wind on bended knees;

Forests harbor ancient secrets in ageless trees.

Hungry wolves roam tundra under winter moon;

The dead in old graves add to graveyard gloom.

Fields of granules form a desert of shifting sands;

Blades of grass form savannahs in distant lands.

Forget not celestial galaxies spiraling in majesty,

The mystery of the many in a universe of unity.

IF ONLY WE 'HUMANS' WOULD FOLLOW NATURE AND ALLOW SUCH 'ONENESS' TO RULE US. FOR 'HE' CREATED US, '...FROM ONE BLOOD, ALL ONE UNDER GOD...' AMEN. A FINE WORK, INDEED, MY FRIEND. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

Expansive! And I really love that last line! — “The mystery of the many in a universe of unity.” I’d like a tattoo of those words if ever I was inclined to write on myself. Haha! Thank you ~~ djl

Although you deviate sometimes from your theme of the singularity of many, your poem has a rich tapestry of many collections of like species in nature that have a single purpose when they are all together, like grazing animals flock to discourage predators.

That is a sight, when birds in flight, undulate so fluidly in ever-changing patterns. Some species of Fish do that too. So beautiful to behold. What this piece brought up in me: To think is to have doubt. Even the greatest thinkers will, at some point, admit the futility in thinking. This, then, is the ultimate paradox of thought: to want to discover something that thought itself cannot think. When we love, accept, and respect another person, no matter what they hold as personal truth, we are exhibiting our oneness with them. Enjoyed this, John.

For those who do not endorse the oneness theory, they are indeed unfortunate. For the simplest proof of it all is the Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would like them to do to you (Luke 6:31). Or, perhaps even a stronger affirmation of your fine poetic treatise of belief, do unto yourself as others expect you to do for them. It seems far too many people don't understand this oneness. After all, only Man invented separation.
