-- Still a Mystery --

By John Herlihy

Everything was a mystery,

Back in the days of yore.

The sun rose and set, a wondrous mystery,

The sun orbiting in days that went before.

The power of a thunderstorm,

With no means to measure its force.

Sound and light from the stark heavens torn,

Echoing thru infinity until it runs its course.

How to explain the seasons,

With no knowledge of earth orbiting the sun.

Each with their own beauty, their own reasons,

Four undeniable realities from mystery spun.

Everything was a mystery,

The sun, the moon, the stars.

Origin of the universe, a mystery,

The planets, Milky Way, those galactic stars.

A story makes our universe known,

A tale to make all of nature coherent.

The narrative into the mystery sewn,

Uniting all things into the one thing evident.

Out of nothingness, the known to fathom

Mysteries spun out of shadows and light

Out of emptiness, the need to imagine

Planets, moons, stars that inhabit the night

Everything was a mystery

Back in the days of yore

Everything is still a mystery

Understood now as never before

YOU ARE SO RIGHT, MY FRIEND. THE MORE WE LEARN...THE MORE WE WILL HAVE TO LEARN. BECAUSE THERE ARE CERTAIN MYSTERIES THAT WE WILL NOT UNDERSTAND ON THIS SIDE OF HEAVEN. FOR, AFTER ALL...WE ARE NOT GOD! LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

With the universe expanding faster than the speed of light, the more we know the less we can understand of what is out there. Another mystery to ponder and to write about. Is it also fair to say "misunderstood now as never before?"

I love a mystery. We know much more today compared to years ago. What will we know tomorrow? Enjoyed...

So true. Werner Heisenberg — 'Not only is the Universe stranger than we think, it is stranger than we can think.'

In the years that I've been watching science go after the very, very large and very, very small, the more answers we find, we create even more questions, so there seems to be a never-ending search for the source of almost everything in an unending way.

It is so easy to fall back on simplistic myths in a world that is getting so complex that only computers can analyze it. I don't find that frightening and accept the challenge of learning all that I can, while enjoying the ride as we learn more and more, year after year.

Yes, "everything is still a mystery" for as so many philosophers have said, "you have answers, I have questions." Just watched Ad Astra yesterday and was struck with much of your poem's message.

The human mind is the second universe on earth. Aristotle proffered: "The more you know, the more you know you don't know." Human knowledge: explicit, implicit, tacit, procedural, contextual, whatever category you put it in - it's a given, that next week the human family will have more knowledge than they do today. But as we're seeing unfolding now in dramatically grotesque ways, far less wisdom. A refreshing reminder, John, that no matter how intelligent we think we are, we have only scratched the surface of God's creation. r
