-- Finding Truth --

John Herlihy

Denying truth,

The ego makes its claims.

I am my own truth,

Nothing of truth remains.

Truth lies beyond us,

It cannot be found inside.

Truth will bind us,

With the vast universe wide.

Imagining truth,

Wondering what I will know.

Where will it lead me,

That final destination we all go.

Intangible, invisible,

Not something that we see.

A unity of one, indivisible,

Sewn into everything we be.

Seeking truth,

The path sharp as a razor.

Difficult and narrow,

Balance is in our favor.

We live in dread,

Without the benefit of truth’s goal.

In seeking, we feel fed,

Nibbling the crumbs of our beggar’s bowl.

Finding truth,

In life, no true attachment.

Ever seeking, ever finding,

That one true attachment.

We are as children,

In the field of an uncertain reality.

We are as seeking pilgrims,

Within the realm of a certain mystery.

I don't think we are totally dependent upon an ever-changing truth your poem seems to suggest. As I look at society as a whole, our overall enlightenment from primitive beings to the modern humans uses truth. Working to solve some of the greatest mysteries and problems of all time with constantly newer tools--a kind of just in time technology--enabling us to move on to the next level of truth. For example, for the most part, sharks are not dangerous. Even though most people are still deathly afraid of sharks.

Reading this, I couldn't help but reflect on a Zen belief: Zen is not effort. Effort is tension, effort is work, effort is to achieve something. Zen is not something to achieve. You are already that. Just relax, relax so deeply that you become a revelation to yourself.” For me, this belief is akin to truth, especially as you so deftly cited it in this poem.
