My Only Skeleton Key

By John Herlihy

I always feel completely at ease inside my own skin;

I make my own decisions, nothing decided on whim.

I follow my natural inclinations, not considered prim;

I do not consider myself perfect and have my own sin.

I always feel completely at ease inside my own space;

Here I am a proud member of the noble human race.

The world has its rhythm and sets its own sure pace;

It is not from surroundings I draw on heavenly grace.

It makes no matter about my immediate surroundings;

Sit with prime ministers or children and their playthings.

Whether I am earthbound only to accept what life brings;

Or whether I am sky-bound to lift aloft on my own wings.

Clothing does speak for a person based on one’s attire;

What I look for in others are their virtues I may admire.

it is not from my immediate surroundings that I aspire;

I seek an otherworldly presence for my heart to inspire.

I like to preserve my own space so others don’t invade.

When I am by myself, in my solitude, I hear a serenade.

When I go about my business, I see much of a charade.

Still, life has moments and moves forward as a parade.

Society has its place, but I preserve my own inner cocoon;

By the day I work hard, but at night I enter my inner room.

I try to find things out, investigate, and do nothing assume;

Eventually I hope my knowledge can be wisdom in bloom.

The world is full of locks that block the true reality to see;

I need a key that in every instance brings revelation to me.

True questions abound whose answers are full of mystery;

A clear, open, and pure heart may be my only skeleton key.

Usually a rhyming tale gives up something in the telling. But not yours. You draw it out and sum it up as well as anyone.

A delightful poem in words and form. The last line put it all together for me. Well done.

Thanks, Richard, for the explanation! But I still don't understand the term to lock or block the reality. What is a can of worms being opened? Isn't reality the time we are awake? and your dream time is when you go to sleep? There is nothing to block either your reality time or your awake time.

If you're talking about some writers writing themselves into a corner got themselves stuck there in their stories, then it's a good thing. This means those writers have e a lot of inspiration to write about the same topic. They are more focused. It's what they do best. But that doesn't mean that they don't know the reality.

What is reality anyway? Who can say that our dream time is not the reality and our awake time is our dreams?

As in some people, they may suddenly wake up from their slumber and scold themselves for things which they think they may have done wrong in their lives. But in reality, who cares? No one, except themselves.

But I know most poets are more emotional anyway.

I don't even have skeletons in my closet to begin with. I won't know how to define what a skeleton in the closet is. I am a very straightforward person. I give honest reviews and most often it gets me in trouble and people hold grudges against me.

There is a saying in China. If you have not done anything wrong that is against your good conscience, you won't have to fear anything if someone or something knocks on your door at midnight.

The moral is: If you do not want anything unpleasant to be done to you, then don't do the same to others. What you reap is what you sow.

If you have not done anything wrong, there are no skeletons in your closet.

I don't think anyone has a completely pure heart, but to be open is priceless. A very interesting self-assessment. The precision with the way it is written is amazing. Are you sure you are not part AI? ;-)

I have often wondered but I've never looked up why the key is called a skeleton key. The simple assumption might be that it opens the closets where the skeletons are kept. ;-) I know that's wrong but it makes a lot of sense to me.

Quite a roster of points for self-analysis. You are a fortunate man.
