I TREMBLE AT THE THOUGHT

John Herlihy

I tremble at the thought of your heart in my hands,

Your whispered cries of love, your little reprimands.

I tremble at the thought of not feeling your desire,

Embers of your fiery passion aflame with eternal fire.

I tremble at the thought of both our legs intertwined,

Together we are like knots, tied up tightly in the mind.

I tremble at the thought that my presence not enough,

My presence in your absence leaves me in the rough.

I tremble at the thought that I might say a thing wrong,

That you might turn away and listen to another’s song.

I tremble at the thought you might simply slip away,

Missing you would then become like forever and a day.

I tremble at the thought that I will no longer tremble,

That would be the day to see my whole world crumble.

INDEED, FOR THOSE TRULY IN LOVE...WALK LIGHTLY, TAKING NOTHING FOR GRANTED. BUT ALWAYS AWARE...AND CAREFUL, NOT TO DO 'ANYTHING' THAT WOULD NEGATIVELY AFFECT THEIR TREASURED...LOVE RELATIONSHIP. YES, THAT'S HOW IT IS. BEAUTIFUL! LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

My wife and I were both 23 when we got married. She had already lost an older brother and her mother to cancer. One day I told her I didn’t know what I would do if anything happened to my parents or one of my siblings. She said, “Don’t say that. The time might come when you have no choice but to give up one of your family members.” We have been married 56 years. Many times various things have caused me to tremble. Regardless, I have been forced to meet them head on and try somehow to deal with them. For some reason, it seems I can accept things easier in these older years than I could when I was young. I’m thankful for that. This was a very good write and offers much food for thought. I have been away for quite sometime. Nonetheless, I am still appreciative of your fine skill at writing poetry. Please continue to teach me the way . . .

What is greater than the loss of love? The loss of the ability feel the loss of love-I death.

That was the lesson in your poem today, carefully repeated to drive it home. I am more struck numb without even a response when trouble comes. Don't even respond immediately. But I do tremble whenever my bare skin is suddenly exposed to cool air or even a fan. It is strange that I don't mind the wind outdoors, but a simple flow of air-conditioned air on my bare neck and make me shiver.
